事務局に財団法人「日本科学協会」の平成17年度笹川科学研究助成募集要項が届い
ております．
平成16年度は410件が採択されている日本でも有数の民間の研究助成です．募集対
象は３５歳以下で特に大学院生や大学院生同等以上の方が応募できます．申請書の
書式等はホームページもしくは協会からの郵送をE-mailかFAXで申し込むことになって
います．

この度、IODP部会では科学立案評価パネル(SSEPs)の委員を募集いたします。
科学立案評価パネル地球内部部会（ISSEP）委員と地球環境部会（ESSEP）委員を、そ
れぞれ１名ずつ募集いたします。詳細につきましては以下をご覧下さい。

科学立案評価パネル(SSEPs)委員の選出について

皆様におかれましては，日頃，IODPの推進に御尽力いただき，誠にありがとうござい
ます．この度，日本地球掘削科学コンソーシアムIODP部会では，科学立案評価パネル
(SSEPs)の委員を募集いたします．募集いたしますのは，科学立案評価パネル地球内
部部会（ISSEP）委員と地球環境部会（ESSEP）委員を，それぞれ１名ずつです．
科学アドバイス組織（Science Advisory Structure: SAS）は，IODPにおける科学提案
主導型のプログラムの根幹をなすシステムであり，また深海掘削が過去数十年にわ
たって継続してきたのも，このSAS が研究者・技術者のボランティア精神によって運営
され，支持されてきたからに他なりません．殊に科学立案評価パネル(SSEPs)はSASの
中核的なパネルであり，IODPの科学の方向性を見据えて科学掘削提案の評価と成長
を促す，最も重要なパネルです．SSEPs会議は，年に２回開催され，会期は各４日間と
なっております．
現在のパネル委員の方々は，以下の通りです（* 今回退任）．

つきましては，下記の要領で委員２名を広く募集することになりました，自薦他薦は問
いませんので，ふるってご応募いただくとともに，適任の方を御推薦下さいますようお
願い申し上げます．
なお，SSEPs委員の活動に関わる経費（旅費等）は支給されます．

野の専門家を希望します．

決定後できるだけ早い時期．11月中旬のSSEPs会議（於 沖縄）に出席していただくこ
とになります．

IODP NEEDS YOU!
The Japan Drilling Earth Science Consortium (J-DESC) is actively seeking two
experienced scientists to join the Science Steering and Evaluation Panels (SSEPs) in
the IODP Science Advisory Structure (SAS) to represent the Japanese community.
At any given time, more than 50 Japanese scientists and engineers serve on the
seven scientific panels that constitute the IODP SAS. The SAS panels advise on the
full spectrum of scientific and technical issues that are essential to the success of
international scientific ocean drilling.
Japanese representatives to the panels are generally nominated by J-DESC
subcommittees. Panel members are typically appointed for three-year terms. They
commit to attending two meetings per year in international locations. Workloads
between meetings vary from panel to panel.
J-DESC will appoint two new Japanese SAS members to SSEPs for Earth's
environment, ESSEP, and for Earth's interior, ISSEP from from a pool of volunteers
and nominees. This time, new members will be preferably Sedimentologist for ESSEP
and petrophysics/hydrogeology/tectonics for ISSEP.
All new members will serve for three years, beginning October 1, 2004. These panels
nurture drilling proposals to the point where they could potentially be incorporated
into the drilling schedule. The two panels jointly evaluate ready proposals and pass
them to the Science Planning Committee (SPC) for final approval, ranking, and
scheduling. Panel mandates and functions are similar to those for the interim planning
structure that can be found at www.isas-office.jp/isas_committees_panel.html
Japanese scientists willing to respond this call should prepare a CV and letter of
interest. Letters should briefly document science publications, previous experience (if
any) in DSDP/ODP shipboard participation, scientific leadership and related activities.
Those who are willing to recommend Japanese scientists for the nomination should
send a recommendation letter and letter of acceptance from applicants. All
