AGU Fall Meeting 2023: 11?15 December 2023 in San Francisco, CA (hybrid format) S025 - Progress in Submarine Paleoseismology towards Understanding Large Earthquake Recurrence Conveners: Michael Strasser (University of Innsbruck), Jamie Howarth (Victoria University of Wellington), Ken Ikehara (Geological Survey of Japan, AIST), Cecilia McHugh (Queens College, City University of New York), Valerie J. Sahakian (University of Oregon) Session description: Short instrumental records provide a limited perspective on Earth’s largest earthquakes. New advances in understanding the spatio-temporal distribution of earthquake rupture have emerged through the application of novel approaches for extracting earthquake signals from marine geological records, which expand large earthquake catalogs thousands of years into the past with unprecedented precision. Despite these advances, challenges remain in submarine paleoseismology. Quantitative attempts to generate predictable relationships between earthquake rupture characteristics, ground-motion-induced sediment remobilization, sediment transport and event-layer deposition are still in their infancy. Establishing high-resolution event chronologies, determining earthquake recurrence intervals, and defining the spatial extent of past ruptures from geological observations needs further improvement in many settings. This session invites contributions that highlight recent success and new perspectives in submarine paleoseismology. We welcome contributions from a broad spectrum of approaches encompassing offshore observatories, research cruises and IODP expeditions, sediment core analyses, geophysical, geotechnical, and fluid dynamics modelling, and statistical seismology. Planned invited speakers: Jenna Hill (USGS): Marine paleoseismic records from the Cascadia Subduction Zone: Insights from detailed AUV and ROV surveys at the deformation front Toshiya Kanamatsu (JAMSTEC): Chronostratigraphy of deep-sea event deposits using paleomagnetic secular variation record in Japan Trench: IODP Expedition 386 submarine paleoseismology Abstract submission: via https://agu.confex.com/agu/fm23/prelim.cgi/Home/0 Abstract deadline: 2 August (Wed.), 2023 23:59 EDT/03:59 +1 GMT ================================================================ # 不達メールアドレスは随時配信リストより削除します. URL: http://sediment.jp/ ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■
