Session T6-5 Asian continental margin sedimentation: Processes and records Convenors: Shouye Yang, Tongji University, Shanghai, China, syyangtongji.edu.cn Xuefa Shi, Ministry of Natural Resources, Qingdao, China, xfshifio.org.cn Steven Kuehl, Virginia Institute of Marine Science, Virginia, USA, kuehlvims.edu Sergey Gorbarenko, FEB of RAS, Vladivostok, Russia, gorbarenkopoi.dvo.ru Franck Bassinot, CEA, Saclay, France, franck.bassinotlsce.ipsl.fr Che Abd Rahim Mohamed, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Bangi Selangor, Malaysia, carmohdukm.edu.my The Asian continental margins (AM) are featured by strong land-sea interactions between the Eurasian continents and marginal seas and open oceans, and have developed the unique river sediment routing systems, with the mega-rivers sharing a common source in Tibet but displaying a contrasting range of human and natural influences on their fates. Huge sediment inputs from these mega-rivers and small mountains rivers (e.g., in Taiwan), totally accounting for ~70% of global flux, make the Asian continental margins the most active boundary for material exchange and nutrient cycling, and the ideal places for investigating the influences of natural and anthropogenic factors on earth surface processes. We welcome contributions on sediment source to sink processes of Asian continental margins and paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic reconstruction on various temporal and spatial scales. Innovative and integrated approaches that can advance the interdisciplinary studies of Asian margins are particularly welcome. We plan to develop holistic and cooperative studies on the processes and records of continental-margin sedimentary systems that will provide better constraints on the flux, transformation and burial of terrestrial matter from various sources on continental margin sinks. URL: http://sediment.jp/ ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■
