================================================================ 日本堆積学会 メールマガジン ◆2017年2月21日(720号) ================================================================ Advancing Seismic and Sequence Stratigraphy: Insights from Testing the Fundamentals Session ID#: 42611 Title: Advancing Seismic and Sequence Stratigraphy: Insights from Testing the Fundamentals Session Type: Oral Submitter's Email Address: andrew.madofchevron.com Rationale: Forty years ago, seismic stratigraphy transformed the field of sedimentary geology by assigning chronostratigraphic significance to seismic reflections; these features were used to subdivide the stratigraphic record into genetic units, which were mapped at the scale of sedimentary basins. Although initially rooted in reflection geometry and in the interpretation of depositional systems, seismic stratigraphy promptly moved towards interpreting the mechanisms of sequence formation, and in particular the role of eustasy on modulating the stratigraphic record. Since these early days of sequence stratigraphy, advances in subsurface and outcrop settings have been aimed at evaluating the role of accommodation, relative sea-level change, stratal stacking patterns, and more recently, trajectory analysis. Although these concepts are regularly used, they have rarely been treated as testable hypotheses, making fundamental assumptions of sequence stratigraphy equivocal. Here, we propose a topical session, and invite presenters to show their interdisciplinary and solution-driven work, which should focus on rigorously testing fundamental assumptions of sequence stratigraphy. Presentations should be aimed at evolving ideas concerning the interpretation of stratal geometries and on their controlling mechanisms, with the intention of advancing seismic and sequence stratigraphy in both carbonate and clastic depositional settings. Scientific Categories: Stratigraphy, Sediments, Clastic, Paleoclimatology/Paleoceanography Description: We invite presenters to show their interdisciplinary and solution-driven work, which should focus on rigorously testing fundamental assumptions of sequence stratigraphy. Presentations should be aimed at evolving ideas, with the intention of advancing the science. Comments: We are proposing a topical session aimed at advancing sequence stratigraphy through cross disciplinary integration. This session is timely because 2017 marks the forty-year anniversary of the pivotal work on the subject, yet little has been done to progress sequence stratigraphy since. We envision integrated insights from stratigraphers, sedimentologists, tectonisists, structural geologists, modelers, climatologists, oceanographers, geochronologists, and planetary geologists. URL: http://sediment.jp/ ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■
